Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture

Mission Statement

The mission of the Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture is to educate and train students to be healing facilitators in the art, science and philosophy of acupuncture, herbal and Oriental medicine. In accordance with this purpose, the school will strive to prepare students so that they may meet national and professional certification standards prescribed for the practice of acupuncture and Oriental medicine.

History

The Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture is one of the first acupuncture schools in Arizona to be named a candidate or accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Its degree program was granted candidate status by ACAOM in May 2001. In May 2004, its program was fully accredited by ACAOM.

Programs Offered

The Phoenix Institute of Herbal Medicine & Acupuncture offers a Master of Science in Oriental and a Master of Science in Acupuncture. Degree programs are conducted on a 20-week semester system; a summer intensive session is also available. The Master of Science in Acupuncture program focuses mainly on acupuncture, while the MSOM program incorporates a broader aspect of Oriental medicine, including acupuncture, Chinese herbology, acupressure, tuina, tai chi, qigong and Oriental nutrition.

PIHMA's educational objectives are such that upon graduation, graduates will:

• possess knowledge of both the art and science of Oriental medicine, as well as the importance of Western sciences to ensure a thorough grounding in scientific theories and principles;
• demonstrate knowledge, skills and reasoning ability to assess, diagnose, treat and appropriately refer patients who present with a wide range of diseases using Oriental medicine theories and modalities;
• demonstrate knowledge, skills and reasoning ability requisite for safe and effective clinical application of acupuncture and herbal medicine;
• demonstrate ongoing professional and ethical interactions with patients, and collaboration with fellow practitioners and members of the Western allied health field;
• possess skills needed to advance Oriental medicine through scientific research:
• recognize the importance and value of taking leadership roles in the sociopolitical dimensions of the Oriental medicine profession as an integral part of professional responsibility;
• acquire the fundamental skills necessary to implement and maintain a private practice using effective business and marketing practices built on ethical and professional accountability; and
• appreciate the need to pursue lifelong learning and professional growth.
